I have used Terry for a considerable number of jobs over the past few years, and have always found his workmanship to be excellent and his rates very reasonable. A proper old school machinist and engineering shop, Terry often takes on (and completes!) jobs no one else can or will do. Excellent at metal fabrication, welding, small engine rebuilds, motorcycles (both modern and classic).

I’ve used Terry for other things in the past, so a local engineering firm was an obvious choice for me for this job.

I approached Terry first with my cam cover, I specifically asked him on this visit if I was to get the cover powder coated, would there be enough material left on the cover to skim off the top to give an OEM natural metal finish. When I spoke to him he said that he knew exactly what I wanted doing and that there was plenty of material left on the cover to be able to do the job and to go ahead and get it powder coated.

I took the cover away and got it powder coated red. Once completed I then returned back to Terry with the cover wrapped in plastic pristine from the powder coaters. I reminded him what I wanted and he was happy and confirmed what needed to be done.

He said it would be ready following day and I said not to rush as I wouldn’t be collecting till the next day after that so 2 days time.

I returned 2 days later and was taken in to the office by Terry. He presented me the cam cover you see in the photo. He began to tell me how much trouble he had skimming it off as there wasn’t much material left, I was very surprised to hear this as I’d taken the time to visit him first for his ‘professional’ opinion beforehand and he was confident. I noticed straight away one corner had cut very deep in to the cover and cut in to the powder coating.
The other corner he’d clearly just given up as there was still red on it.

When asked what had happened with the cut part he then, with a straight face said “You can just touch that up with some Humbrol red paint”. For the corner where it hadn’t been skimmed I was told I could finish that off myself.

At this point I should have walked out with the cover, however, foolishly I asked him how much I owed him. He said “Call it £40”, £40 to essentially ruin a cam cover. Best case scenario here really should have been he apologised and gave it back to me no charge or offered to replace it.

£40 was handed over and I have a cam cover that won’t be going back on the car.

Before I wrote this review I did contact Terry and waited a few days for a response to rectify this. Even if it is was just an apology I wouldn’t have left this review.

I got nothing back so he’s clearly happy with the quality of his workmanship and how he deals with people.

I advise you take low value easy to replace items to him as when it goes wrong you won’t be so disappointed as I am.

I have used Terry for a couple of relatively small but quite involved jobs. I was delighted with the results and done for a reasonable price. I am happy to travel from London to use Stotfold Engineering because I know he has great engineering facilities and a wealth of experience; which I would struggle to find elsewhere. The one star reviews appear to be from people who expect the service of a QuickFit garage. Try taking a 60 year old motorcycle part to QuickFit and see what happens! The joys of running a business mean you occasionally have to deal with c. Keep up the good work!

Husband visited Stotfold Engineering and is full of praise for this small firm. He has been raving about the fantastic workshop and you couldn’t get anyone more helpful than Terry. Will definitely be using their services again.

Had a problem with a petrol tank, traveled across country to see Terry and I'm glad I did, fixed for a decent price in a small time frame. Amazing set up he has there, very experienced and an immense amount of knowledge which he willingly shares. Shame his business isn't closer to me but would use again

True engineer's, old school, hard to find these days. Terry is so helpful and will help you in any way possible. I cannot believe the variety of work they take on, I enjoy just going round there to see the different things they fix. Their work is first class, very good service and a nicer guy you wont find. I have a home made Trike and Terry has been so helpful with problems. Thank You.

Great service, needed a bottom bracket and headset removed from a bike frame. A bike shop in Stevenage spent a weekend on it and weren't able to remove them and said it couldn't be done. 20 mins in Terry's vice, big spanner and piece of 2 by 2 and they were both freed.

I had a bent half shaft on a MK2 Jag.
Expensive to replace and difficult to get hold of. Terry sorted it for me for a fraction of the cost.
A really talented engineer, I will use him again.
