Having had a nightmare experience with my previous Financial Advisors I was naturally nervous about engaging a replacement. Approaching retirement I was concerned that my savings were not going to provide the income I had been led to expect.

To make a long story short myself and Shan have been friends for 23 years, I had always been curious about investing but am dubious of people handling my money by nature. Around 9 years ago when Shan was taking the exams and studying to get into this profession I witnessed first hand the amount of work he had to put in to get the qualifications. In 2013 I had some spare money around me and he asked if I wanted him to invest for me, as it was him I just told him yeah get on with it. He created my portfolio about 6 years ago with real passion (he did not want to let me down lol). Anyway that was it, I was now an investor and making between 10-20% a year on my investment, and taking out profits every now and then to fund my leisure activities or whenever I needed some extra cash. I stumbled into investing by chance, through a mutual friend.
Being very sceptical & extremely distrustful of this format, but curious, I thought a chat & a bit of understanding won’t cost me anything more than time.
I wasn’t expecting to learn much.
The state of the high street bank interest was then, as it still is, unattractive, so if I were to try & by some miracle attain a better percentage return, then this might just be worth looking at.

Suspiciously, I met with Shan over 3 separate occasions, grilling him on every aspect & detail I could challenge, to reduce my concerns & eventually I decided to give it a go, albeit tentatively.
Starting with small financial steps initially to test his abilities, after all I’d never heard anything positive in regard to a financial advisor or investing.
In fact it had been the exact opposite from anyone I’d heard investing stories from before this, tales of woe, disappointment, regret & ultimately loss, which had frightened them from ever venturing again.

Most people like me just don’t understand investing, but I chose to monitor the first 12 months & judge for myself, surprisingly the results were decent.
Therefore I became slightly braver & invested some more, which again produced better than expected results, more importantly, way ahead of any returns a high street bank could have achieved for me.
Then after 3 years of assuring myself & working closely with Shan, I knew this investing format can work with the right advisor, who actively gets involved.
This is what I enjoyed most, the person advising me wasn’t just a faceless “dedicated team member”, who I’ll never meet, know, will be replaced within 6 months & couldn’t care less who I am, or how much I’ve entrusted, or am at risk. We meet as regularly as is necessary, to plan, tweak & update strategies.
So I further committed on a greater scale & yet again the percentage returns have been progressively impressive.

Nine years on from when I first invested, I have no regrets, but I do have very good returns.
I’m glad I gave myself the chance to learn & be guided by the right type of financial advisor.
