As an Edinburgh based Architect, we have worked alongside McColl's on numerous projects over the years. The service provided has always been excellent and the cost too. One or two poor reviews on here (perhaps from folk with unrealistic expectations) do not reflect the reality of working with this firm.

Terrible service. Took 1month longer than expected to do some routine structural design for a flat. It delayed works for me as a result and as a result my builder needed to start another job which further delayed me. I received no explanation throughout. When I eventually received the design they had omitted half of the work i asked them to do. I spent hours contacting them to try and find a date when I would get the completed design.I struggled to get a call back. I then received an invoice before I received any work done. There was never an apology or reduction in fee to reflect the loss of income I suffered as a result of this firms incompetence. If the firm communicated with me it would have allowed me to plan for the delays. Communication was almost non existent throughout. Disorganised and mismanaged the works throughout I would avoid this firm.

Approached them to produce a drawing for a home extension. They wasted MONTHS of my time to produce something that they said would only take a couple of weeks. This meant my builder couldn't start the job on time. During these months the engineer didn't respond to calls or emails when I was trying to find out why they were taking so long. In the end the drawing they produced was totally wrong and wasn't what I had asked for. And to top it off the they tried to con me by charging me triple the price we had initially agreed on. Absolutely disgraceful service

Personally, I have found them down to earth, helpful and pleasant. I think engineers are generally expensive but qualifications, industry experience and Insurance is not cheap these days. The costs are driven by the local council / building control potentially being too cautious with simple aspects that architects are capable of doing.

Drew the wrong roof structure and tried to bolt structural steel in to a wall that didn't exist at the level in question, with fasteners that were borderline sized. We had a struggle to get the director on site to review his mistakes while the project was forced to a halt, then had a shock when he sent an invoice to try and charge for correcting his errors. A terrible performance and offhand attitude throughout with no hint of acknowledging the failings or time and money they cost. RESPONSE TO OWNER: Details of aired grievances and MA's response from the time are detailed in the review and while Google reviews didn't exist 10 years ago MA's previous errors were brought to light again recently during further building work.

Knowledgable, professional, friendly, courteous and respectful! Jim kindly put my mind at rest over potential structural issues regarding removal of an “Edinburgh Press” cupboard. From the moment I walked into McColl’s offices their staff generously gave of their time and expertise to ease my concerns.
